His research focuses on the relationship between Haute Couture and exoticism, orientalism and ethnography. Khémaïs ben Lakhdar works on the relationship between European colonial empires and oriental fashion during the Belle Époque and the Années Folles. Centered on the methodology of material cultures and Postcolonial Studies, his research aims to establish precise links between the work of fashion designers such as Paul Poiret, Vitali Babani, Fortuny, Callot Sœurs and the many decorative systems of the Orient (India, Maghreb and the Middle East). Doctorate (in progress) in art history, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne: "Oriental and Orientalist fashion in Paris at the turn of the 20th century (1860-1925)".
As scientific research is an integral part of fashion and its evolution, the MMM Endowment Fund established a doctoral contract with a fashion student from EHESS in 2020, and has since been working to develop a scientific research fashion prize that is unprecedented in the European fashion competition landscape.
