ARCHIVES - THE MMM PRIMER: FASHION AND SPORT

The programming of exhibitions at the Musée de la Mode is often based on current events, as was the case for the "Fashion and Sport" exhibition.
Marseille played host to one of the World Cup soccer matches, celebrating both France's historic victory over Brazil and the two decisive goals scored by Zinedine Zidane, a native of the city.
No one can ignore the influence of sport in the urban wardrobe, and the fascination it holds for designers and couturiers, from the street to the catwalk, from the stadium to the fashion house.

Through a judicious selection of exceptional pieces, visitors explored (from 1930 to the 2000s) the knowledge of this wardrobe adapted to the practice of sport, which became popular in 1936 with paid vacations.
Curator Olivier Saillard highlighted the Museum's collections, which included a number of items donated by the Institut Mode Méditerranée: the 1930 beach skirt and shorts combination by Hermès, Jean Patou's beach pyjamas, an incredible pair of boxer shorts and bathrobe by designer Jean Rémy Daumas, dated 1980, and the skater outfit donated by Chantal Thomass in 1990.

I remember the international success of Marseille-based designer CydJouny's sneaker, a mule with a stiletto heel, featured on the cover of the catalog for which all the photos were taken by Elisabeth Montagnier.
Whether it accompanies a sporting activity or dresses us for a show, sportswear facilitates a "mobile way of life".
