When you think of Marseille, you think of Bain de Mer and its beachside wardrobe, including the essential swimsuit. But what about its history?
The pen and eye of Olivier Saillard, curator of the Musée de la Mode, shed light on the subject in an exhibition accompanied by a book published by Editions du Chêne.
"Of all the items in a woman's or man's wardrobe, the swimsuit is undoubtedly the richest in bodily information. Despite their ever-smaller proportions, they are the medium through which body language is expressed in terms of modesty and denudation. From the six-piece swimsuit of the last century to today's daring thong, from the bikini of the 40s to the monokini of the 70s, the swimsuit is the exact barometer of each individual's relationship with the gaze of others."
