ARCHIVES - THE MMM PRIMER: FASHION AT THE RACES

"Retracing in 2014 the rich history of Fashion at the Races, which will have been for many decades, the most beautiful occasion to dress!"

The Borély racecourse adjoins the Borély public park and the Château in which the Fashion department has resided since 2013. Christine Germain-Donnat, Director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, de la Faïence et de la Mode (Museum of Decorative Arts, Earthenware and Fashion), retraces the rich history of fashion at the races in 2014, which for several decades was the best opportunity to dress up!

A history of fashion through the showcase provided by the racecourse for the upper middle classes, from 1850 to 1960, when ready-to-wear clothing was introduced. A journey that covers a glorious period in the history of horse racing, an entertainment that combines sport, money, worldliness, competition and elegance. An ideal opportunity for fashion houses to show off their latest models, dresses, jewelry, ties, gloves, scarves, hats, shoes... What used to be is no more: races can now be followed on a smartphone, in front of deserted grandstands.
