ARCHIVES - THE MMM PRIMER: A TRIBUTE TO BETTINA

Tribute to Bettina 1991

The majestic Tour du Roi René, which guards the entrance to the Port of Marseille, was at the height of elegance for a vibrant tribute to model Bettina Graziani. During the 50s and 60s, she was the muse of the greatest couturiers: Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Jacques Fath, Chanel... Bettina Graziani was also the inspiration for many photographers such as Henry Clarke, Irving Penn, Sabine Weiss, Cartier Bresson, Horst... Courted and engaged to Prince Ali Khan. It was in Azzedine Alaïa's studio that I met her, a little impressed by the woman Françoise Sagan had dubbed "L'Eminence Rousse" in an article in Vogue magazine. Bettina knew about the Musée de la Mode de Marseille and Azzedine Alaïa's involvement in its programming. The project to shed light on the fashion career of a personality who had become the emblem of a certain French fashion took place in Marseille. Bettina received a moving tribute from many Marseillais, who were thrilled to finally meet the woman they had fallen in love with on glossy paper. Many subsequent exhibitions were dedicated to her.
